Are you interested in adventure? Are you interested in backpacking? Do you want to go to the “Super Bowl of Scouting”? Here’s your opportunity. The Ore-Ida Council of the Boy Scouts of America is sending two contingent crews to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimmaron, New Mexico.
Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America’s largest national High Adventure Base. It covers 137,000 acres – about 214 square miles – of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) range of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico.
Philmont Scout Ranch operates 34 staffed camps and 55 trail camps. Philmont has high mountains with rough terrain and elevations that range from 6,500 to 12,441 feet.
Philmont Scout Ranch provides an unforgettable adventure in backpacking, with land along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails. Philmont Scout Ranch programs feature the best of the Old West – horseback riding, burro packing, gold panning, chuck wagon dinners and interpretive history – with exciting challenges for today, such as rock climbing, burro racing, mountain biking and .30-06 rifle shooting. It’s an unbeatable recipe for fast-moving fun and the outdoors.
For 2018 the Oreida Council is organizing 2 contingent crews to take 12 day treks in the Philmont backcountry. A contingent crew is made up of Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venturers from multiple units all over the council that come together for the trek. It is an opportunity for individual scouts to take a Philmont Trek even if their home unit can’t.
The Crews will be leaving July 5, 2018 and returning July 20th. You must be between 14 and 21 years of age (or 13 and completed the 8th grade) by July 7, 2018. One of the crews will be co-ed so female Ventures are encouraged to apply. The cost will be $1450 and includes 3 training hikes, transportation, lodging, food, crew t-shirts, training, and spending money while at Philmont. This opportunity is open to ALL registered Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venture Crew Members from any unit in the Oreida Council.
This opportunity will be limited to a maximum of 20 youth participants and the crews will be forming in April and May of 2017.
